Hi,
I am looking to buy a 1970's NZ caravan and I will need a vehicle to tow it. I haven't bought a caravan yet but the laden weight is likely to be around 1500 or 1600kg. I would prefer a vehicle that can tow 2000kg and have a download on the towbar of 100kg minimum.
I live rurally, and I think I should maybe consider a diesel for economy in my day to day "non towing" driving.
My budget is around $10000 to $14000.

What do you suggest?

Hi there,
I have seen a few options near your range.
2012 Mazda CX5 diesel has a braked tow capacity of 1,800 kg.
2008- VW Tiguan has 2,200kg braked tow.
2010 Hyundai Santa-Fe has 2,000kg tow.

Hi
Do you know the download kg allowable on the towbar of those? I know the CX5 is 100kg.

What do you think of a Ford Territory or a Holden Captiva?
They both fit the towing bill.

Thanks

Hi there,
I haven't heard of any reports good or bad on the Territory, but the Captiva has been often complained about and so I wouldn't recommend.
I can't see the downward weight specs for these vehicles, however the NZTA advise below.
In addition, when you are loading the trailer, make sure that there will be a downwards force on the vehicle towbar at the point of attachment equal to about 10% of the weight of the trailer plus load. Do not put too much weight at the back of the trailer. Ensure there is a downwards force at the point of attachment, to improve the handling characteristics when you are towing.
