I have a 1980 Lite weight 1300 caravan. Con you please tell me what the caravan would weigh an what vehicle would be suitable for towing.

Anon

We would imagine it will weigh around 1300kg, but you could take it to a weigh bridge to confirm, and for this you will need either a large sedan or small to large SUV that is capable of safely towing this caravan - this caravan will need to have a braking system too. You can have a look at our list of tow ratings guideline for more info on suitable vehicles.

To tow safely the law states that the vehicle must stop from a speed of 30km/h within 7 metres - ensure this criteria is met.

What are your views on towing with a vehicle that has cvt transmission

Anon

It wouldn't be my first choice for towing a heavy trailer - CVT transmissions do not have a good reputation for reliability and putting unnecessary load on it won't do it any good. CVTs flare up (like a slipping clutch sensation) and for towing a heavy load it will be frustrating.

A conventional auto or manual gearbox will be a better option.

The most accurate way would be to take the caravan to the refuge weigh bridge, unfortunately we do not possess the gross vehicle mass figures of a circa 1970 12 foot Hurst brothers caravan.

Perhaps another member in the forum may have more information they can offer.

CVT transmissions have developed a lot over the years however you should take the manufactures specifications seriously, and try to not over work / load the transmission.
They still don't offer quite the same benefits in a towing situation as a conventional Automatic / Manual vehicle.
