I have a Hyundai I20 2014 bought new. I had DuraSeal applied at the time of purchase through the Dealer. Now the Paint has peeled off on the bonnet (about 10cm by 10cm) and also in patches on the right edge by the windscreen. I understand DuraSeal give a lifetime guarantee for the original owner.
My big concern is if this is occurring in 2 places, what will happen with the rest of the paintwork over time or are they obligated to repaint the whole car now.
I am currently waiting on a booking with the dealer so they can inspect the damage but I wondered if there is anything I should be asking beside the obvious. Is paint peeling a common occurrence on this make of car or others?

Hi there,
It is a strange scenario, paint peeling seems to happen to some cars or brands more than others (I'm not aware of anything specific to your car). I think an assessment might need to be carried out as to why the peeling has happened and then see if the application of the coating was designed to prevent this from occurring.

I’d be interested to hear your results as I believe They’ll say it wasn’t the fault of Duraseal - as this is a known problem with Hyundai paint - especially with White Hyundai i20s Between 3-7 years old they used a new supposedly scratch resistant paint they’ve since discontinued and we now all bear the brunt that they know it’s peeling off - hence why they changed paints - but they won’t acknowledge it even worldwide. Just google Hyundai i20 paint peeling problem and you’ll find out what I mean as there are many many articles on this known problem. I’m in the beginning of trying to fight Hyundai about this as it’s peeling all over my car now and it’s only 5 years old. I bought it second hand and there were some small vinyl taped patches when I bought it from a dealer and I just thought they were old scratches or something but now we know the truth as we’ve witnessed multiple patches. You’ll notice a small bubble or crack first then if you don’t immediately tape it with vinyl it will lift and keep peeling very quickly. Weve already found others like ours in NZ, Australia has a Facebook group growing and court cases overseas but Hyundai won’t do a damn thing!! We’ve been told to go to Fair go as they just did an article on Paint peeling on newer cars on 19th October but haven’t had a reply back from them yet. You should send them an email as well. The more of us that do the more chance we all have of getting them to own up to this - they should be recalled! No one will help and our estimate in Tauranga is up to $6000 for a repaint.

Note it was not a Duraseal problem according to Auckland Vehicles (Winger). The car paintwork was eventually repaired by a car painter after approval from Hyundai and was paid for by Hyundai.
It seems the car painter also found some other parts that needed repairing so it took a further period for Hyundai NZ to approve it so I was without the car for about 4 weeks overall. Now 1 year later I am having the same problem near the front left wheel and also the Right wing mirror.
I have sent an email to Auckland Vehicles just last Thursday together with Photos taken of the problem areas, so now awaiting for approval from Hyundai for the fix. I have also suggested they redo the whole car as I cant keep going on like this.. Also I cant get a courtesy car while we are on Covid level 3 so said I will wait till we go to level 2. I will also tell them about the white paintwork being a known problem when they get back to me, thanks Campny.

The paintwork has now been inspected by a car repairer and Auckland Vehicles will get back to me when they can fix it under warranty. The next day I noticed a large area of paint had come off on the rear hatch, as well as the paint by the left front wheel has come away. I was amazed at the large area of the paint now gone from the hatch, large flakes of paint now gone, a pity I cant attach photos. I have sent the photos to AV in case they missed that area, because the paint was not missing when I took the car in for inspection.
