Our 2011 1.4 TSI Touran (110km) recently developed an issue with the DSG gearbox and the VW dealer said it needs a new mechatronic unit. A friend made me aware of the current VW recall for the 7 speed DSGs and according to VW's website the Touran should be covered under the recall.
The car has been with the dealer for 4 weeks now and and they're still discussing with VW if and how the repair would be covered - one of the issues that came up is that the car was a (new) import from Switzerland.
The car has been serviced regularly by the VW dealer. Given that there have been a number of recalls for this DSG model there seems to be a systemic quality issue with the design, and at the same time I don't think it's normal for a gearbox to fail at this mileage. What are our chances for the dealer/VW to cover the cost of the repair? Can they exclude a car simply because it was an import?

Hi there,
Not all recalls are exclusive to NZ new models, we have a large used Japanese import market and recalls can still be carried out if they are identified as a global recall. However, sometimes it can be that the recall will be for a certain part of the transmission and it may be found that it doesn't extend to the actual part that has faulted.

So, how can I find out if it's a global recall or not, or if my import is covered?
Neither of the two web sites I've quoted above make any remarks on imports and suggest that all vehicles with that 7 speed DSG are covered.

Hi there,
The main option you have is through Volkswagen NZ as they have the global database access to recalls and what vehicles are and are not involved.
