Hello,
could you tell me which vehicles you would recommend for towing weights averaging 1500 kg and up to 2500 kg - double horse float with 1 to 2 horses and gear. We currently use a BA Falcon, very happy with it, but due to upgrade & considering SUV's - any advice? Thank you.

There is a lot of vehicles that match your criteria. Depending on your price range you should consider the Mazda CX-5 2.2 diesel capable of towing a braked trailer up to 1800kg, Audi Q3 2.0L diesel which can tow up to 2000kg braked trailer, Mitsubishi Pajero 3.0 diesel capable of towing 3300kg braked trailer or Toyota's Prado 3.0 diesel which can tow up to a 2500kg braked trailer. Other choices are Hyundai Sante Fe 2.2 diesel which can tow a 2000kg braked trailer ot Kia's Sportage which can tow a 1600kg braked trailer. It really depends on the budget, if the budget allows for it the Toyota Prado will be a good option otherwise the CX-5 or Sante Fe should tick the boxes.

Thank you. Are there advantages of something like a Prado compared to a Falcon?

ABayliss

The Prado is highly recommended as a tow vehicle, and we would suggest it ahead of a 2WD passenger car such as the Falcon for towing. The main consideration for a tow vehicle is how well the vehicle can stop - ie; it must be able to stop from 30km/h within 7 metres. As a sturdy 4WD SUV, the Prado would be able to cope with the weight of a horse float better, and would have better pulling power too (particularly the diesel), which would be our preference.

Thank you. We have been looking at them. How would a Cherokee Jeep & a Ford Ranger compare?

ABayliss

Both the Grand Cherokee and Ford Ranger would do the job well, but obviously, theyre quite different types of vehicle (given that the Ranger is a ute and the Jeep an SUV).
Personally, as a good all-round workhorse/tow vehicle, I'd still rate the Prado very highly though.
