My car at times, while we are travelling, seems to lose power and starts to jerk but then comes right. Could this be a tell tale sign that I need to replace the cam belt?

Cam belts give no warning signs they need replacing, they will just break.

Depending on the make and model you drive, major engine damage can be the end result of a broken belt.

Five years or 100,000km's whichever comes first is the normal replacement period (there are exceptions) so it would pay to have it replaced if required.

Re your loss of power and jerking issue, it could be a number of things from blocked fuel filter to an ignition problem.

Unfortunately I think it's time for a visit to the garage.
