I recently purchased an import Toyota Carib and find that there is quite a lot of road noise.

A friend told me it was due to imported cars having less soundproofing than NZ new cars, and that different tyres would help.

Is this true and what sort of tyres would I be asking for?

Yes, there is some truth in what your friend has told you, but I'm not sure replacing the tyres will make the improvement you are looking for.

It really depends on what sort of tyres are on the vehicle currently as to what difference replacements would make.

If they are a all-round mud/snow tyre then replacing them could make a big difference.

Problem is, you will be up for four tyres which will be expensive. If the tyres are similar to what you can buy new from NZ tyre stores then noise improvements maybe minimal.

I don't believe there is a big difference in the brand of tyres available as far as noise levels go. You no-doubt need to be conscious of cost, so you will be looking at a good all round tyre which most major suppliers have on their shelves.

Best to talk to your local tyre store and seek their advise and to negotiate price.
