If I'm at an intersection and have a green arrow to turn right am I allowed to make a u-turn? If there is a car and he is turning left and he has a give way sign, does he have to give way to me while I'm making a u-turn?

Hi there,
The U-turn at an intersection will generally be possible unless there is a sign saying it is forbidden. It would be very hard to signal the intent to U-turn, but as with the current traffic rule, the u-turning vehicle will need to give way as if they were approaching from across the intersection. The road code states that "U" turning traffic gives away to all other, repeat all other traffic.

Here's what the Road Code says: "Making a U-turn
You are normally allowed to make U-turns, as long as the road is clear in both directions and it is safe to do so. Make sure you have enough room to complete the turn and don't create a hazard for oncoming vehicles.
You aren't allowed to make U-turns if a 'No U-turn' sign is displayed"

It is not very well covered in the Road Code which states you can make a U turn when
the road is clear in both directions. I have discussed this with the NZTA via email and
they confirm that the U turning vehicle gives way to all other traffic.
