Please advise why ACC are penalising lower carbon emitting diesel vehicles over petrol vehicles with higher ACC assessments See below

Petrol cars also pay an extra 6 cents per litre of petrol in ACC levies, whereas there is no ACC levy on diesel fuel or on RUC, so all of the ACC for diesels is collected in the annual licence fee. For a typical compact petrol car travelling the average annual mileage that amounts to an extra $65/year in ACC levies, so the total annual total is about the same as what a diesel car pays - and for larger petrol cars even higher.
