Hi,
I have for 20 years now a light trailer. It is a second hand army trailer. It has standard a brake plus handbrake. However the brakes on the trailer do nor work good. According to regulations the trailer does not need a brake. It always passed WOF with no problems. Last week there was a problem. Does not pass because the brakes do not work. I mentioned that it passed for 19 years already. Answer was, the trailer do not need a break according to regulations, but if there is a brake it should work. So it does not pass.

However you can bypass that when you disable the breaks totally.

Can you shine a light on what I I should or can do?
Thank you

Hi there,
According to the WoF rules, a trailer with brakes fitted must have them correctly working or will fail.
So your two options will be to have them removed/ significantly disabled as to constitute a pass, or repaired.
The wof rules can be found here: https://vehicleinspection.nzta.govt.nz/virms/in-service-wof-and-cof/general-trailers/brakes/service-brake,-parking-brake,-emergency-brake-and-breakaway-brake
