New car report: Diesel power for Subaru

Launched this week in New Zealand, hot on the hammer of the international launch at the Frankfurt Motorshow is Subaru's new range of diesel vehicles.

Subaru first entered the diesel market in New Zealand earlier this year when they landed a number of previous model Euro spec diesel Legacy and Outbacks. Thinking they had landed enough stock to last for 8 months until the run-out of the old model, they were pleasantly surprised to find the entire shipment sold out within 4 months.

With the new Legacy and Outback being launched progressively as stock becomes available, the arrival of the new diesel powered versions coincides with that of the new diesel Forester, the first time we have seen Forester with a diesel engine here in New Zealand.

For the foreseeable future, Subaru's diesel powered product is available with 6 speed manual transmission only, due to torque limitations of the new CVT auto, the automatic transmission of choice for Subaru going forward.

Numerous refinements have been made to the diesel boxer engine

Fuel consumption and emission levels have been the major focus. Modifications to the pistons, inlet manifold, turbocharger, particulate filter and exhaust gas recirculation cooler all contribute towards a cleaner, leaner, more fuel efficient engine.

A new alternator has been designed to reduce draw on the engine at low rpm, while increasing output at higher speeds.

Comfort and noise levels have improved considerably, with the gear selection now controlled by a slick cable set-up, which enhances feel and reduces transfer of noise and vibration associated with direct linkages.

In keeping with the Euro theme, the 2.0D Euro has the indicator stalkon the left of the column.

Specification levels include Xenon headlights, heated front seats, windscreen wiper de-icer and side mirror defrosters. Rain sensing wipers, dusk sensing headlights, electric driver's seat, Bluetooth, electric folding mirrors and Xenon headlights round off the comprehensive package.

Spec level for the Outback is similar to the Legacy apart from the Xenon headlights.

Aimed at high-end Japanese competition, larger rear wheel drive six and eight cylinder Aussie product, as well as entry level premium European brands, the Legacy and Outback provide a high degree of driver enjoyment, are comfortable, safe and sure footed, with road-holding up there with the best in their price range.

Subaru has traditionally copped criticism for being greedy at the pump, but with big improvements in this area with the new range, and now the addition of a diesel engine, there's every reason to include them on the shopping list.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine in the Legacy and Outback produces 110kW at 3,600rpm and 350Nm of torque at 1,800rpm. Due to minor differences in the air intake system, the same engine in the Forester loses a couple of kilowatts down to 108kW, not that you'd notice through the seat of your pants.

The Forester has cried out for a diesel engine for a long time, and dropping the new boxer diesel under the bonnet doesn't disappoint. Plenty of power and torque provides for responsive acceleration. Good visibility, plenty of space and low noise levels make for a practical and comfortable family wagon.

With 1,500kg towing capacity for the entire diesel range, pricing within a few hundred dollars of the petrol powered 2.5i Premium at $48,990 for Legacy 2.0D Euro and $52,990 for the Outback 2.0D Euro, providing you don't mind shifting cogs manually, the new diesels will not disappoint.

Priced at $45,990, the Forester 2.0D Euro sits midway between the petrol powered XS and XS Limited.
