Petrol and diesel prices as at end December

A sharp rise in retail prices during December as crude oil prices rose nearly US$10 a barrel during the month due to the global economic recovery and speculation that the harsher Northern Hemisphere winter would increase demand for heating fuel. Allowing for the slightly weaker NZ$, the net effect was an 12% rise in refined petrol and diesel prices.

Petrol and diesel prices as at end November

There was no change in pump prices during November in spite of a jump in oil prices - thanks to a rising kiwi$ offsetting those increases. But a falling dollar and rising commodity prices at month's end signalled a price rise at the start of December.

After a month of no price changes, October bought a price shock to motorists with petrol prices rising 11 cents during the month, mostly due to scheduled tax increases (7c on petrol and 3c on diesel).

There was no change to fuel prices during September. Diesel prices remained unchanged for 13 weeks.

Petrol and diesel prices as at end August

The price of petrol fell a total of two cents per litre during August, dropping to $1.74 per litre for 91 octane in the main centres. It initially rose two cents in early August to $1.78, before falling four cents during the month.

Petrol and diesel prices as at end July

Retail fuel prices remained virtually unchanged during July, despite the introduction of the Emissions Trading Scheme. Petrol and diesel prices dutifully rose three cents per litre on 1 July, before dropping three and two cents per litre respectively a few days later on the back of falling commodity prices.

A large drop in the price of crude oil helped with a fall in petrol and diesel prices during May, although the reductions were partly offset by the declining value of the New Zealand dollar.

Petrol and diesel prices as at end April

Retail petrol and diesel prices increased six cents per litre during April, with a litre of 91 octane rising to over $1.80 for the second time this year. Petrol ended the month at $1.82 per litre, and diesel $1.22 per litre, the highest diesel price in 17 months.

Petrol prices rose 10 cents during March to over $1.80 per litre for the first time since October 2008, before dropping back to 7 cents at the start of the Easter holiday period.

Petrol and diesel prices as at end of January

Fuel prices began to edge up during January, with petrol and diesel rising on two occasions, before dropping once later in the month. In total, petrol rose 10 cents per litre and then fell three cents. Diesel initially rose six cents before also falling back three cents.
