Who knows when you’ll need it?
Let us introduce you to Leanne Ellis. Leanne experienced a number of hard knocks that pushed her to face reality and make tough decisions at a young age. Here’s her story.
Profession: Energy Trading Analyst
Situation: With only a sister left in her family she wanted to make sure she didn’t leave a financial burden if something happened.
Leanne is only 26 years old, single, and steadily employed as an Energy Trading Analyst — and yet she felt the need to get some life insurance and make her sister the beneficiary.
“It just seemed like the right time in my life. The right time to take responsibility for my family. I figure that if something happens to me it would all come down to her,” she says.
“Unfortunately I’ve had it proven to me time and again that life’s too short. Both my parents are gone now and my brother. That’s why it would all fall to my sister. You think it’s not going to happen, but it does.”
You see, Leanne’s mum died eight years ago from cancer. Five years later her brother committed suicide. The year after that her father died of a heart attack.
“It’s made me think about things differently. It could happen to anyone at anytime. You don’t always get a hell of a lot of warning,” says Leanne.
“If you were just to go suddenly...think about who’s left. It’s a horrible enough time as it is let alone trying to pay for [a funeral].”
She chose AA Life Cover because she already had her car and contents insured with AA Insurance and had experienced their straightforward claims process first-hand.
Just over a year ago she “lost it” on a gravel road and wrote her car off in a ditch. But the AA Insurance claims process was so quick she replaced her car and was back on the road within a week.
“The accident was on Sunday night. On Monday morning I paid the excess and the money was in my account by Friday morning. Then I went shopping [for a new car] on the weekend.”
With Life Cover, she applied online and then got a call back from AA Life to talk through some of the details before she was completely sorted.
“It was good to get it out of the way. It was something I had been thinking about doing for a long time. It was like —that’s sorted now.”
She has this blunt advice for people thinking about getting life insurance:
“Just suck it up and get on with it. It’s not that big a deal. If you think it’s right for you, just do it. Most people around my age don’t contemplate it much. But at the end of the day, personally, I think you should be responsible and take the stress off everyone else.”
