Tair?whiti Museum is a gateway and resource for the art, culture and heritage of the Tairawhiti - East Cape region and has a reputation as one of the most innovative regional museums in New Zealand.

We are open 10am - 4pm Monday to Saturday, and 1.30pm - 4pm on Sundays and public holidays.

The museum has changing exhibitions of regional history, fine and decorative arts, and a historic cottage and ship to explore. Visit our website or Facebook page to find out what's on when you visit.

Situated on Kelvin Park alongside the river, the museum is just a 5 minute walk from town, or there is plenty of free parking on Stout Street.

The Exhibit Café is open for lunches, brunches, morning and afternoon teas. A wide menu is available and changes with the seasons. The cafe is open from 10am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday, and 10am - 2pm on Saturdays.

Tairawhiti Museum and Art Gallery features an excellent programme of New Zealand contemporary art exhibitions and Watersheds Nga Waipupu, a major new regional history exhibition including more than 200 Maori, colonial and more recent historical treasures, contemporary art works and audio-visuals. Also visit Wyllie Cottage, Gisborne's oldest wooden building, and the 'Star of Canada' maritime history exhibition.
