Mount John Observatory and its spectacular alpine lookout is a place to truly experience and learn. Situated just halfway between Christchurch and Queenstown, beside picturesque Lake Tekapo, is New Zealand's leading astronomical research facility, with a glass-walled cafe where you would least expect it. Enjoy a mountain-top cup of coffee surrounded by spectacular 360-degree panoramic views of lakes, snow-capped mountains and ancient glacial deposits.?

?In the evening, join a stargazing tour and view the stars, planets and distant galaxies of Tekapo's brilliant night sky through powerful telescopes. During the day, explore the many scenic highlights, view storms on the sun through a special solar telescope and learn about leading-edge astronomy research with a qualified guide. Please note that stargazing tours are dependent on prevailing natural conditions on the day.
