Tourism Waitaki

Address:
1 Thames St, Oamaru, New Zealand, 9400 - View the map

The Waitaki District is famous for its unique wildlife, dramatic landscapes, Victorian heritage buildings and strong links to New Zealand's pioneering past. Eco-tourism and the renaissance of Oamaru's historic precinct underpin the region's tourist attractions - where heritage and wildlife abound. Idyllic fishing villages, turquoise blue lakes, snow-capped mountains, green rolling pastures. The region is blessed with a stunning landscape offering an exhilarating environment for outdoor pursuits.

Also famous for its eco-tourism, the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony and Yellow-Eyed Penguin Colony are popular visitor attractions. The stunning Moeraki Boulders are also popular with visitors - perfectly round rocks are a must-see attraction. Other popular tourist attractions are: Alps 2 Ocean cycle trail (opening late 2012), Vanished World Centre, Elephant Rocks, Takiroa Maori Rock Art, Clay Cliffs, Oceana Gold and Totara Estate, where the first shipment of frozen meat was prepared for export to England in 1882.

Oamaru, the heart of the Waitaki District, will transport you to a time gone by when Penny Farthings once raced the streets. Oamaru's annual five-day heritage celebrations are held in November. Head down to the Oamaru Harbour in the evening and be enthralled by the antics of the blue penguins as they come ashore at the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony each night just after dusk. Over the hill from the harbour you can see a colony of rare yellow-eyed penguins from a viewing hide at Bushy Beach. For further information please contact the Oamaru i-SITE, email [email protected] or view the.
