White Island Tours

15 The Strand East, Whakatane, New Zealand, 3120 - View the map

Look, listen, smell, touch, taste - touring the inner crater of an active volcano is truly an all-round sensory experience!

Begin your White Island adventure in Rotorua. Our transport partner will collect you from your Rotorua accommodation and bring you on the scenic journey across to New Zealand's east coast. The 80-minute drive will take you past a number of lakes, through remnants of NZ rainforest and past some of New Zealand's most productive agricultural land. On arrival in Whakatane, you will join the White Island Tours crew for a 5 to 6-hour adventure to explore active volcano that is - White Island.

Located 49km off the coast, the journey towards New Zealand's only active marine volcano continues aboard one of our fleet of boats. Upon arrival, we'll disembark directly into the crater complex. No climbing is required as this is one of the world's most accessible volcanoes. Our experienced and knowledgeable guides will take you on a fascinating tour to explore White Island's inner crate, hear about the interesting history and geology of White Island, get up close to roaring steam vents, bubbling pits of mud, hot volcanic streams, the amazing lake of steaming acid and see the remains of the island's Sulphur factory.

This award-winning, fully-guided eco tour operates every day (except Christmas Day), weather permitting, and bookings are essential. Because of the weather dependency we call our passengers the night before the tour, between 7pm and 8pm, to confirm whether the tour is proceeding and the exact time of check-in. All passengers are required to wear fully enclosed shoes on the island - no open-toed footwear or sandals are permitted. We also recommend passengers wear older clothing and bring with them a jacket or something warm for the boat ride, plenty of sunscreen and a bottle of water for the volcano walk. During the summer months, passengers are welcome to bring swimming.

You're only a few clicks away from what can only be described as a truly unique and awe-inspiring adventure!.
