Visit Wellington Zoo and fall in love with nature.

Home to over 500 animals, from amazing insects and invertebrates to the only bears in New Zealand - the gorgeous Sun Bears - as well as a walk through Kea aviary, Lions, Tigers, Giraffes, Chimpanzees and more. A trip to the zoo is a great day out. Read on to find out what else Wellington Zoo has to offer to make your visit even more special. And with every visit you support our conservation work, helping save animals in the wild.

Close Encounters
Impress your friends by telling them how you came face to face with, and hand-fed, a Lion; sat with a Cheetah; stepped into the role of Giraffe trainer; or make them jealous with pictures of you hanging out with Red Pandas or Meerkats. Talk to our keepers and find out all about how we care for our animals. It's an unforgettable experience and 10% of the proceeds from your encounter will go to conservation projects supported by the zoo.

The Nest Te Kohanga
Visit Wellington Zoo's state-of-the-art animal hospital to see our vet team in action, looking after Zoo animals as well as injured native wildlife from around Wellington and New Zealand. The purpose-built centre includes a viewing facility into each of the hospitals main surgical rooms so you can see real-life procedures up close each day. Ask questions of the team while they work and learn more about how we keep our animals in tip-top health.

Celebrate a birthday at the Zoo
With our birthday safari you can make your child's birthday unforgettable, starting with a special guided tour of the zoo. You'll get to play some fun games around the zoo, and get to make some enrichment for the animals. Before or after your Birthday Safari, you can continue the celebrations with a birthday feast at one of our picnic sites open to all visitors, with catering that can be arranged by our on-site Mojo Caf?..
