Still popular with kids, a trip to MOTAT and Western Springs is a great day out. There's always something special on in the school holidays too – see the website for details...

3. Valonia skate park

Check out the new skate park in Mt Roskill – the skate park is part of the new motorway project and word on the street is that it's one of the best in Auckland.

4. Ōtāhuhu public pools

There are great pools for little ones here and the most amazing thing is that it's completely free. They also have a mighty fine holiday programme.

5. Pah Homestead

This beautiful old homestead in Hillsborough has revolving exhibitions, a great café and is set in beautiful grounds for the bairns to run around. Entry is by donation.

6. Whoa Studios

This is a one-of-a-kind place – it's a film studio, puppet show, park, café and restaurant combined... There are usually school holiday specials if you book online that includes a show an admission to the very cool park.

7. The Pumphouse

There are often excellent kids' plays showing at the Pumphouse – combine it with a picnic by Lake Pupuke.

8. Auckland libraries

There are always events on at our excellent libraries – check out what's happening at your local library or go to one you've never been to before!

9. Rainbows End

Treat your kids to a guaranteed great day at Rainbows End – be sure to check out the AA Driver's Town (and save on your ticket if you're an AA Member!)

10. Auckland Zoo

Always popular and there's always something new at the Zoo.

12. Bethells Te Henga

This is my second favourite West Coast beach (after Anawhata) for the sand dunes alone – they're epic and the thrill of walking up and running down the steep sides dunes will wear out even the most energetic!

13. Butterfly Creek

Hang out in the tropical butterfly house, see the dinosaurs and meet New Zealand’s only saltwater water crocodiles. There are farm animals, alligators, bugs, monkeys and a beautiful bird aviary, and train to ride and a great playground. And there's usually a special if you book online.

14. Maritime Museum

Aucklanders are free at the Maritime Museum (with proof of address) and there is a lot for kids to see and do.
