It’s important to us that you have all the information you need in these uncertain times. The below information will help you understand how your policy is impacted by COVID-19 and what your options are moving forward.

Cover for pandemics

Epidemics or pandemics are generally not covered by travel insurance. The General Exclusions for epidemics/pandemics and government travel recommendations due to COVID-19 took effect from 10 am Friday 28 February 2020. This means that from this date your AA Travel Insurance policy does not provide cover for any impact related to COVID-19. 

If you’re currently overseas

Under your policy, the General Exclusions for epidemics/pandemics are not currently being applied to medical and emergency medical transportation claims related to COVID-19. That means that if you are already on your trip, cover can still be provided for medical and emergency medical transportation costs if you test positive for COVID-19. Please be aware that if you are travelling to countries listed as ‘Do Not Travel’ by MFAT, we may not be able to provide cover.

If you’ve postponed or cancelled your trip

If you took out cover before 30 January 2020 (date of travel advisory release) and your travel was impacted by COVID-19 before 28 February 2020 (date of travel advisory release), then you can submit your claim as normal.

If you took out cover after 30 January 2020 (date of travel advisory release) or your travel was impacted by COVID-19 after 28 February 2020 (date of travel advisory release), then you aren’t able to make a claim. We understand that these are unprecedented times though, that call for a considered approach.

If you have cancelled your travel plans because of COVID-19, we can give you two options:

1.Changing your travel policy dates

You can change the travel dates on your policy so that you can postpone your trip and assess the situation as it evolves. Travel dates can be changed to within 12 months of the original policy commencement date to give you the flexibility to make decisions later. There is no fee to change your policy dates, however, an additional premium may apply if there is a change in age, travel destination(s) or travel duration.

2. Requesting a refund

If your travel plans have been directly impacted by COVID-19, and you don’t intend to make a claim against your policy, you can request a refund of your policy premium by emailing [email protected].

If your travel plans have yet to be directly impacted by COVID-19 and you are outside of the 14-day cooling-off period, we will be unable to refund your policy premium at this time. If you are an AA Frequent Traveller policyholder and have already travelled under this policy, we will be unable to provide a refund. However, you may continue to use your policy until the end of the period of insurance.
