I have purchased a Bucaneer 565 which sits on a braked trailer. I want to be able to tow the boat comfortably from Auckland to Tairua and Rotorua, Lake Taupo etc. I am considering the purchase of a Hyudai Santa Fe 2.2R CRDi A6 5S – Its towing capacity braked is 2,000kgs. It has a maximum torque of 436Nm at 1800 to 2500 rpm and maximum power of 145kW / 3,800 rpm. The vehicle fits our price range and we are wondering if you think this type of SUV will have the power required to tow the boat safely without any issues?

The torque is a important factor for towing and the Sante Fe has plenty of it which shouldn't let you down, as well as being rated to tow up to a 2000kg braked trailer. Sante Fe is a popular vehicle and has a good record for reliability. To tow safely you will need to increase your following distance and adapt your speed to the conditions of the road. You will have more weight behind you which will increase your (braking) stopping distance which means you need more space to stop.
