Time to retire my 91 Maxima Ti V6 import only NZ owner, fantastic to drive, really goes but the body is needing a bit of TLC. I am a driver, not a steerer so want something goes well as a drivers car, looks good, cost around 14-16000. Am looking at a Falcon BA II 07 with a lot of extras 114,000Kms, The kms are not a big concern to me, a couple of Maxima Ti's but wrong colours and they seem to have lost their way a bit with the look of them. Can you suggest anything else that I should consider. Thanks.

The Falcon is a very good car and represents great value for money second-hand. Ford have the added benefit of having the reputation for being a good drivers vehicle.

You could look at a European vehicle such as a BMW 530 but your budget would probably get you an older vehicle in comparison to the Falcon.

Well, you gave me a curved ball with the 530, been looking and I see what you mean about an older vehicle, dont the drivers like driving them - all fairly low mileage for the age! or am I wrong on that? Some pointers please as to what I should be looking for, seems that the Jap imports are a better buy than local - half the price or more on some cars. I would be in the 2002/3 range I would think. Thanks for your help and ideas.

The 530 has a proven and reliable engine and transmission however, a proven past service history is important for added peace of mind.

We would advise extreme caution with a used import from Singapore because of humidity issues and be very careful of a vehicle out of Japan. Past history would strongly suggest servicing is not a high priority for the Japanese in their domestic market.

Our preference would be a NZ new vehicle with a proven service history.

It would also pay to compare specification levels on different vehicles and don’t assume every model is identical especially if looking at a used import v NZ new.

Cooling systems are one area of concern with the use of plastics very common. Over time these components can suffer from fatigue and if left unattended large repair bills can result.

Those repairers who specialise in BMW's, often recommend a complete check of the cooling system for new owners to ensure everything is in good working order.

Brakes can also become expensive on these vehicles with new brake rotors often a recommendation when the pads require replacement.

You need to experience the drive this car provides in comparison to what you driven in the past to judge whether or not you should consider making the change.
