Hi. re Santa Fe. I have heard the older diesel was not so good. They now seem to have a 2.2 CRDi. Is diesel engine this ok? Is it an improvement on the older 2.2 that weren't CRDi? Are the older ones ok anyway? Thanks

The previous 2.2L diesel is fitted with Bosch solenoid injectors, solenoid type EGR (exhaust gas recirculation valve), variable geometry turbo (VGT) and can run on a maximum fuel rail pressure of 1600bar. The R-series engine was introduced in 2010 and has been upgraded for better fuel efficiency. The major changes are Bosch Piezo injectors, DC motor type EGR valve, eVGT (electronic VGT) and it can run on a maximum fuel pressure of 1800bar. Besides all this technical stuff, the engines have a good reputation and we are not aware of major problems with them. The pre-2010 engines are known to break exhaust studs but mechanically the engines are ok. The most common problems diesels are faced with is contaminated fuel. The injector pumps and injectors run on fine tolerances and contamination from dirt or water can cause major damage to the injection systems which can result in engine failure. This is the reason why it is so important to fill up at petrol stations that have a high turnover of fuel and not at rural/farm tanks.
