I am looking at purchasing a 2007 JTD wagon with 107k km. Appreciate that the European vehicles cost more to run/maintain. However I know little about diesel turbo models and have heard that this can be particularly expensive, with a cambelt change not far away at over $3000? I am comparing to a similiar age/km Peugeot 407 wagon - Any thoughts on the Alfa maintenance cost/reliability
over the 407 ?

This is a bit of a difficult question because these are both cars you'd buy more out of passion than with a focus on reliability and cost of ownership, which is the nature of your question. If you want low maintenance costs, go for a Camry or Mazda6, but clearly, these are not the types of car that appeal to you.
Ultimately, of the two you mention, the Peugeot 407 probably has the better reputation for reliability. Peugeot's diiesel engines (2.2 or 2.7) are held in high regard and the 6 speed auto is a nice transmission from a driver's perspective.
