The Mazda3 has traditionally been the "driver's choice" in this segment, as it is very good dynamically and the GSE has a great 6 speed automatic transmission. The Corolla has the bullet-proof reputation for reliability, so these two both have their marketplace strengths. The Corolla has a CVT transmission which is nice and smooth, but enthusiastic drivers tend to prefer traditional autos.
Having said that, both are very good to drive and both are very reliable.
The up-side of the Corolla Levin is that it is a new model, whereas the Mazda3 is due to be replaced early next year, so as good as the 3 is, it will shortly be an "old" model.
So, in answer to your question "which one would be the better of the two?" although it sounds like I'm fence-sitting, it's a case of personal preference and what you want in a car.
Although I've yet to drive the new Mazda3, everything I've heard and read would indicate it is a very good car, so if you ask me the same question around March next year, the new Mazda3 will be on the market and will be the newest of the two, therefore, my reply may be different.
