Kia ora,

I'm buying my first car and I'm looking at a few models in particular and I was hoping for some advice/comparisons/known issues etc.
I'm a new driver so I need something easy to drive. I also need it to be pretty easy to get in and out of as I have mobility issues.
I'm looking at 5dr Hatchbacks, 1.5L, ranging between 2000-2006, automatics, and $8,000 max.
My main priorities are easy access, handle well, fuel efficiency, and low cost repairs/maintenance.
Primarily city driving with just one or two adults with the occasional longer trip with more people.

The cars I'm looking at are:
- Toyota Ist
- Mazda Verisa
- Nissan Note
- Nissan Tiida
- Honda Jazz
- Suzuki Swift

I'd appreciate any help.
Cheers

In this year range all the vehicles you mention, except for the Toyota IST and Mazda Verisa, are available with CVT transmissions. CVT transmissions in this era suffer from reliability issues so they are best avoided. However, the Nissan Note and Tiida, as well as the Suzuki Swift are available with a desirable conventional automatic transmission too - you will need to confirm the transmission type to avoid the CVTs.

The Suzuki Swift 1.5L is a good vehicle worth considering - with adequate performance and handling for a small car. The Mazda Verisa 1.5L is also a good choice but avoid the 4WD versions if you have no need for 4WD as it will cost you more with maintenance and fuel usage.

If you find that the 1.5L motors don't provide the performance that you desire then consider the Nissan Tiida fitted with a 1.8L engine.

Thanks for your reply and advice. I'll make sure to avoid the CVTs.
