We intend replacing our 1998 Nissan Pulsar. Our leaning is toward a AWD of some sought. My wife is a keen tramper, and at times needs to travel off road to get to the starting point of her tramp. Not really 4WD territory. Our ages are 65+ and the proposed vehicle would also be used for round town usage as well as trips away. Our leaning is toward a Suzuki SX4, 2011+, under 50000km and a budget of under $25K.

Because of our age we would prefer a vehicle that has easy access, low maintenance and running costs, in addition to the safety aspect. We would welcome any suggestions of other makes of vehicles that you may feel, fit our needs. Many thanks.

nissan qashqai might be also another great candidate.

1)Easy to get in and out,
2)smaller version SUV
3)Cheap on Fuel
4)Roomy inside and good seats
5) Enough ground clearance
6)Nissan is more trusted brand than Suzuki.
7)Huge range from 15k-25k from year 2007-2012.

The NZ new Nissan Qashqai will be a 2WD vehicle. There are some Japan used imports in AWD but they are badged Dualis. These CVT transmissions on the Nissan never had a great reputation so it's best to look for a low mileage version - however, we are told that newer CVT transmissions have improved.

The Suzuki SX4 has a good reputation and it will be a good choice for you to consider. The AWD Suzuki SX4 will be a better choice than 2WD versions considering the terrain (dirt roads) you will be driving.

Are you able to suggest any other make of vehicle that we should consider?

Many thanks

Yes, I do agree on the CVT.

I have a Toyota Rav4 2012 limited model but also had a 2008 model from 2008 till 2012. i would highly recommend it.

they are very roomy, comfy, not so great on fuel but not bad either. Averages about 9-10km per litre depending on how you drive. they are also All wheel drive. i have driven thru few challanging areas and exceeded my expectation. This also should fit well within your budget. i think they share same engines as Toyota camry 2.4. These are bulletproof engines. Great part is the cabin space. down side will be the road noise but not much worse than any other Jap car really.

You can have a look at the Honda CRV and Toyota RAV4 around the 2008 model with low mileage.
