Hi there,

I am looking at buying a new Polo GTI 2001 (manual) around the 6000-7000 mark and wondered if there were any key things I should keep an eye out for when having a look? Obviously a good service history is a must, but the few that I have seen are all around the 100k range, so is there anything that is likely to go wrong?

Also, is there any other cars you would recommend instead of the Polo? While being mechanically sound is important, the quality/enjoyment of the drive is also a big must.

Thanks in advance,

Verne

Hi Verne. You're definitely minimising the risk by going for a manual, as Volksgagen automatics from this era were not without their problems.
Some electrical issues, throttle bodies etc were some known issues with this model, but major components such as engine, gearbox etc seem to last fairly well.
As with any front wheel drive car, check for CV joints clicking on full lock.
As you say, a good service history (including cambelt replacement), lowish mileage and a generally well kept and maintained car are all key factors in minimising the risk on any used car.
