Are these a reliable car? anything to watch out for?

While it may be less powerful than the 2.0 litre, the 1.8 litre is probably the one to have as it has the more reliable transmission, being a conventional auto rather than a CVT.
Other than that, the Toyota Wish is a well regarded model with plenty of room and a good reputation for reliability.

ok that's good to know. The Corolla Fielder doesn't give us sufficient backseat leg room so now looking again at the Wish. There's a 2007 1.8 model on offer with tiptronic transmission (any issues with tiptronic), plus a 2009 2.0 but wouldn't that have the D4 engine? Would love a caldina, but these only go up to 2007, and so far we haven't been able to find a 2007 1.8 on sale, only 2005s. We didn't particularly like the Avensis - quite heavy. Be nice for long road trips, but probably not for regular short trips.

The 1.8 Wish would be a very good choice. Tiptronic merely means that the gears can be shifted manually if you so choose, but it's one of those features that rarely gets used. There's nothing wrong with it as a feature though.
And yes, the 2.0 litre would be a D4.

Cool thanks for that. A lot of the wishes i've seen don't have a boot cover i.e. to hide the boot area when 3rd seat is down. Do you think its possible to buy a boot cover? Also, the wish has a footbrake instead of a handbrake. Do you think that's such an issue, particularly in a plae like Wellington where its quite hilly?

I don't think many (if any) of these 7 seat people mover type vehicles have covers, they usually have tinted glass instead.
I would think an auto-trimmer could probably make a cover if you had a need for one.
I don't think the foot operated park brake would be an issue, particularly with an automatic car.
