Hi
I've been reading on here a few warnings against CVT cars, but what about VVT from the mid 2000's? Specifically, looking at the Mazda Verisa (04'-07') and Toyota Spacio (04'), Toyota Corolla Allex and RunX both 04.

I'm newish to NZ, but we've also noticed a lot of 2nd hand cars imported directly from Japan, never registered in NZ. Are there any risks or things we should look out for with 2nd hand imports or is it just like buying a locally owned 2nd hand car?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks

Hi there,
I'm not aware of any VVT (variable valve timing) faults on the cars you are looking at.
A wide range of vehicles have VVT in their engines now days and seem to give little problem.
Fresh imports are generally a mixed bag, you do take a risk. The unknown with any vehicle is the service history, what was replaced and when. You are more likely to obtain this information with a NZ new vehicle.
The AA recommends all used car buyers get an inspection and History check ( if the vehicle is not a fresh import) to give the best possible chance of finding out all about the vehicle before purchase.
