Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on a fair $/(km) mileage rate when I use my car for work purposes.

I know ird offers a rate of 77 cents/km for self-employed workers but I am a full-time employee.

The AA's calculation is based on cars at the 3rd year of age, where depreciation is a major component. A 10 year old car has already depreciated significantly, so while our rate for a car up to 2.0 litres would be 64.2c per km, a 10 year old car in this range might only be around 40c per km.
Basically, any negotiation between employer and employee is an agreed rate that both parties agree upon, so can really be anything.
The IRD rate for your vehicle would be on the high side.
