Hi,
I have a imported Nissan Dualis that is recommended to use Premium .
I have just been told today by a petrol station person that I can in fact run on
unleaded and that NZ's unleaded equates to oversea's premium grade.
Please confirm this for me.
Regards,
Tony Ward

Hi there,
Specs for Japanese domestic vehicles are hard to come by, but most are tuned to run on 91, with some opting to use 95 octane fuel.

Thanks for that. But is it in fact true that NZ unleaded equates or is close to overseas premium grade, due to our better refining in NZ.

No, NZ’s unleaded (regular grade – 91 octane) is not equivalent to overseas premium grade (95 or 98 octane). Octane for octane, our petrol is comparable with other countries, e.g. 91 in NZ is comparable (and compatible) with 91 in Japan (USA is the exception as they measure octane differently). The important thing is to stick to the minimum octane number recommended by the manufacturer. However, NZ does have amongst the highest fuel quality in the world, superior to Australia and Japan, mostly due to the lower sulphur content in our fuel specifications, and on a par with European standards. But our specifications also differ due to climactic differences.
