If I am turning left from a one lane road into a multi-lane road, and there are cars parked in the left lane of the multi-lane road, can I turn straight into the right lane? Or do i have to turn into the left lane first and then signal to change into the right lane?

Hi there,
The NZ roadcode says you should turn into the closest lane when coming out from a single
lane road. It will be safer this way due to possible cars in the other lane coming past at speed, unaware of you pulling into their lane.

What Cade said is absolutely correct, but obviously, if the left hand lane is not able to be entered due to the parked cars, the right hand lane is the only lane you could enter, so you'd pull into the right hand lane.

Can the driver turning left into a two lane road move immediately to the inside lane if done safely? Can I please have a link to the Road Code as reference?

Hi there,
Please read part 2 of the Road User Rule for information on the use of lanes. Some specific situations are not mentioned exactly as you may experience but there will always be an overarching rule that applies. http://www.legislation.govt.nz/regulation/public/2004/0427/latest/DLM303041.html

Hi there,

Just on a different topic, does anyone know if there is an official legal definition of "inside lane" and "outside lane" in the NZ Road Code?

Thank you.
