Hello,

Are there any regulations around the placement of a GPS windscreen mount. I have my GPS mount on the windscreen to the right hand side of the steering wheel. I find that this has no obstruction to my view out the front window. However, my vehicle failed a WOF inspection because of the GPS location. The Inspector informed me that I need to place the GPS in the middle of the windscreen. That makes no sense as it definitely restricts my view to the left side. The wording on the Inspection report is Accessories to be moved from C.V.A of W/Screen. I have no idea what C.V.A is either.

The other reason for the failure is that my front park lights and number plate lights must be white. Well I agree with that, however I had replaced the globes with white LEDs. They do emit a cool white light light which the inspector interpreted to be blue. I was at his mercy to change them to what I can then argue is a warm white that looks yellow. Is there a true test for the correct colour?

Thank you.

You cannot place the GPS in the critical vision area of the windscreen - in the area in front of the driver. If the navigation device is in this area then you will need to remove it and place it in a safe area that doesn't restrict your view.

The VIRM (Vehicle In-service Requirements Manual) states that a forward facing position lamp must emit a light that is substantially white or amber. For the number plate light it needs to be substantially white. This is up to the interpretation of the inspector.
