I recently received an infringement notice for doing a prohibited U-Turn. The only no U-Turn sign is located just above ground level, at the end of a long median strip, which is planted in tussocks. The intersection is controlled by traffic lights From the right hand (turning) lane, the sign is almost invisible from the beginning of the median strip (obscured by tussocks), and once I was closer to the overhead traffic lights, I was watching them, and not down low, where the no U-Turn sign is. My request to have the infringement notice cancelled was refused. NZTA rules state that all signs need to be a minimum of 1.2 m above ground level (which curiously enough would make a heck of a lot of signs in my district non compliant). Would I have a chance of winning this in court ?

Possibly - if you think the sign was non-compliant, but you'd need water-tight proof and photos showing that the sign wasn't visible etc. Otherwise, I'd advise paying the fine and putting the matter behind you, as if you don't have strong evidence in your favour, you will not win.
