Hi,
I was recently involved in an accident pulling out of a pull over bay on the Kawarau gorge near queenstown.

I was being quite careful, but the view was quite limited for oncoming traffic. After looking both ways many times I decided to pull out when a car came over the brow which was limiting my view and we collided.

The damage to my vehicle was minor cosmetic. The damage to the other parties car has been quoted at over $1000.

It was my first day owning my new vehicle and I had not yet bought insurance. Once I got home that afternoon I bought AA third party insurance.

The car I collided with was not registered at the time of the accident. I am wondering if I am legally liable and have to pay for the damages to his car even though it was unregistered at the time of the accident.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi there,
Because the other vehicle was not legally allowed on the road, they will get there own infringements for this if the Police got involved, but it still doesn't take away your liability as the cause of the accident. You would still be responsible for the repairs to the other vehicle.
