When I put my fairmont into Drive with some brake applied the rear of the car " sits down ". Is this normal for a rear wheel drive car ?.

With no brake applied the car doesn't sit down, thankfully .

From stand still, selecting drive, with the brake applied the cars rear suspension will soak up the forward pushing motion which will make the rear go down. It sounds normal.
