A full flush is expensive - can i save by just doing a partial flush (which I can do myself, similar to a standard oil change) - is there any benefit in doing that or am I just wasting my time and AT fluid?

I realise there will still be dirty fluid in the torque converter but with a partial flush it will be more diluted right?

There's probably no benefit in doing half the job. If you're contemplating a transmission flush, do it properly, as just draining and topping up will only get a small amount of fluid out. Also, it's very important that the correct fluid is used.
My advice would be to have it done properly as you will only be wasting the fluid by doing a partial job, as the full job will need doing sooner or later.

You will find that at least half the trans capacity is actually held in the torque converter. All that will happen is that you will contaminate the new fluid and would be a waste of time
