I have a 20 year old Nissan Sentra. In a recent WOF inspection it came back with a note: " Steering rack pinion seal leaking - rack to come out and be overhauled ( leaking oil)" . The WOF was issued this time but it was implied that it would not happen in future. I have been aware of a slight loss of power steering fluid for over fifteen months and it may have been occurring for some time before then. The level is being checked regularly and topped up as necessary. There are no other obvious problems with the steering.
My question: Is this overhaul necessary in this case, and given the age of the vehicle and likely cost is it worthwhile?

Depending on the model of the vehicle it could be worth anything from $700,00 - $2000,00 and the repair will cost a few hundred dollars. If the vehicle is in good overall condition and has low mileage, without any rust, then it might be worth fixing otherwise selling is possibly the better option and it’s a chance to upgrade to a newer vehicle with less mileage if the budget allows for it.

The vehicle is a N14 SG hatchback, 104,000Km, average condition. I was given an indication of the cost as $350 to $450 for the overhaul of the rack by a third party, plus cost of labour for removal and reinstatement, so if correct would be more than a few hundred dollars.
Are you able to comment on the necessity for this repair?
Thanks.

The oil might only be seeping out at the moment but it will eventually become a major oil leak. The steering system is a safety item so yes the repair is necessary.
