Hi Pat,
It would be advisable to have the problem checked out by a transmission specialist. There are numerous possible causes but it would pay to have it looked at ASAP rather than continue to drive the car, as it's possible more damage could result.

Thanks I took your advice and they tell me I needed to get the transmission flushed first and then take it from there. I did this but on accession it still has shifting problems so they said they would have to take the transmission apart and check to see the problem stating that perhaps it could be the pump is not pumping the oil around and if its not that then they would send the transmission away to a specialist to look at. Do you think this is a good idea or would it be better for me to find just one repairer who does it all instead of them sending it away, also do you have an idea of cost to recondition a transmission its a 98 Toyota corolla. They did suggest to get another secondhand transmission do you think this is a good option. Thanks.

I still think that a transmission specialist would be the best people to look at this. Then you are dealing with one outlet who understands the specifics of the problem. I'm not sure that a second hand transmission would be the way to go because there are no long term guarantees and you could be getting something that is also near the end of its useful life.

Thanks for your advice I have also decided not to get a second hand transmission as my mum always says buying second hand is buying other peoples troubles. I have had advice on the transmission and it is booked in today to be assessed as yesterday it was taken for a test drive by a mechanic to see what the car was doing. Thanks for your help and I will let you know the outcome
