Hi
My 1998 Corolla (170kms) failed a WOF as the RH front shock absorber was found to be leaking. Some mechanics have said I need to replace both front shocks for safety reasons but others are willing to just changeout the faulty shock. The remaining good LH shock must have been replaced at some stage before I owned the car as its not the original - do you think I must replace both? Quotes range from $500-$650 for both which is an expensive exercise so if I can safely do only one I will.

Thanks for any help!

It is recommended that you replace both front shocks at the same time especially at this mileage as you cannot be sure when the other side’s shock was last replaced. Ensure both shocks are of the same type and make. It is not mandatory but recommended as you want both sides of the suspension to be able to react in the same manner - for a safer and smoother drive.
