Hi my car has done 205000 kms and at the last service they said that the brake pads were low and the rotors needed replacing and they would charge 299 dollars for the work. To the best of my knowledge this the first set of rotors the car has had .How do I know if the car needs rotors? Also I have goodyear assurance tyres on the front that are nearly done. They are 195/60 r15 s.what other tyres would you recommend of similar quality . I have had a good run out of these. Thanks for your help.

At 205,000km you've had great life from the rotors. Rotors have a minimum thichness measurement stamped on the edge. Rotors will wear over time and become quite grooved and with a pronounced lip on the surface. Usually, the rotors can be machined flat once before they become undersize, however, these days the cost of parts has become very comprtitive and in many cases, new rotors are almost as cheap as machining the old ones. I'd have to say that $299 for replacing the pads and rotors seems very reasonable.
Most tyres (including the known brands such as Goodyear) are made in China these days, with a new brand popping up almost every week. They all meet relevant standards to be able to be sold here, but some are better than others. However, I'd prefer to stick with a known brand so if you've been happy with the Goodyear Assurance tyres, I'd replace with the same again.
