We took a 2011 toyota highlander for a pre-purchase inspection and the inspector found quite a lot of surface rust on the muffler and parts of the suspension, driveshaft and diff. We couldn't get a clear answer from the inspector re whether this was something we should be concerned about so are unsure now whether we should be proceeding with the purchase at the agreed or even a discounted price. We have photos we can send if that would help. Are you able to provide any advice? Unfortunately we need fairly urgent advice as we have to confirm to the seller whether we want to go ahead.

The inspector's job is to point out any potential defects, but it is up to the buyer to determine whether or not they wish to proceed with a purchase, which in some cases may involve getting an opinion on cost of repairs etc. Perhaps having a Toyota dealer inspect the underbody to give you a clearer idea could be beneficial.
If you send photos to aatech@aa.co.nz we will be very happy to give you an opinion based on photos, although please understand that the dealer will be better placed to provide a definitive answer.
