Hi.
How long should it be expected for an ignition switch to last before replacement?

Anon

You would expect it to last for a reasonable amount of time and hope that it exceeds it.

Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever and there comes a time when you need to replace parts on your vehicle.

A heavy keyring can also reduce the life of the ignition switch.

What is a reasonable time? Five years, seven, ten or more, under normal conditions.

We will need more information regarding your case to advise further.

Ford Territory is one owner. May 2009, mileage 80,000.

All of a sudden the Key went loose in lock, key would turn switch. ignition lights came on but not start the vehicle.

It is unfortunate that the ignition switch has failed at this stage but the new vehicle warranty isn't endless and once it has expired the importer has already fulfilled their obligations.

Sometimes the importer might consider assisting on a goodwill basis if you are the first owner, have always serviced at the agents and the vehicle is fairly new with low mileage - they have no obligation to do so.

You should contact Ford and see whether they are willing to assist towards the repair.

Thank you, I shall talk to the local Ford Agent and let you know the outcome. Cheers
