The starter motor has begun being choosey about when it wants to work this week.
Called the AA out for an idea as to what the problem was, after some percussive maintenance he decided it was the starter motor.
Is it worth trying to clean the starter motor out (I'm not very mechanically minded) or just getting it replaced?
I have a toddler and cant risk it not starting if we are out somewhere.

Get the vehicle to a mechanic or auto-electrician for repairs. The ring-gear condition should be checked as well.

I strongly suggest that you leave the repair to skilled technicians as they know what to look out for and should warranty their work too - confirm the warranty period prior to repair. Avoid second-hand starter motors as they are likely to be in the same condition as the one you have and be in need of an overhaul.
