Many years ago I was advised never to buy a used car from Rotorua because the volcanic fumes attacked the electrical connections and corroded the chromework (and the Rotorua branch of the firm I worked for had to have special filters on their computer equipment). Does this caution still apply to buying used cars from Rotorua?

You raise a very good subject that to be honest, I'd never considered. However, having spoken to one of our colleagues in Rotorua, I'm advised that vehicles that reside in areas close to the thermal activity definitely exhibit more corrosion that normal, although he says this doesn't apply to the whole Rotorua district.
