Hi there

Occasionally when I try to start my car ('92 Daihatsu Charade) I just get a loud sort of grinding noise and the engine doesn't turn over. If I try starting my car again it may either turn over and fire up fine or make the grinding noise again and not turn over. I have recently replaced the battery and believe the alternator is running fine also (deduced from jumping the old battery when completely dead and being able to drive without any issues). I have had the vehicle for about 12 months and it will do this occasionally - about every 1-2 months. I am wondering if my starter motor brushes need changing?

Thanks in advance

This is likely to be a worn ring gear or stater motor pinion. The grinding sound will be the gears not meshing properly.
