I have a 2004 Toyota Ist import. It runs well but has an annoying fault where the speedo disengages so you cant see your speed, but the mileage is still counted. Sometimes the fuel guage does not work either, sometimes both happen at once, sometimes singly ! I have asked auto electricians and they say hard to find and fix. One idea I had was to buy a tomtom or garmin, then the speedo issue would be sorted. I cant locate tne cigarette lighter, or wnere I would plug it in to charge. It seems to go faulty more in warm weather when the car nas been sitting in the sun, and the car interior is warm. Thanks

It sounds like the circuit board behind the instrument cluster has an intermittent fault, and as you are experiencing, electronics are sensitive to temperature so are more likely to fail in hot weather.
I'm sure your car will have a power socket somewhere (maybe in the centre console / under the armrest etc) but unfortunately a GPS unit cannot be considered as a replacement for the car's speedo by law.
While intermittent faults are the most frustrating to locate, this really needs to be fixed (or perhaps the cluster replaced?).

Thank you for your suggestion. At least I know where to start now.
