I recently test drove both the 1.4 and the 1.6 Sport - both new cars. In both I heard a distinct whine although they were different pitches. What could this be and could it be permanent? Lovely cars but that sound would drive me bonkers. Thank you.

We have driven both, and are not aware of any whining that is cause for concern.
Everyone picks up on different frequencies and these may be normal drivetrain sounds for the vehicle. It may be the transmission operation if the trans is CVT Auto.
I don't think the sound will get better over time, may prove very frustrating if you buy it.
