Hi I have a 2004 Mazda 6 manual. On acceleration from stop or very slow in first gear there is a metal-sounding rattle. The mechanic has said it's the alternator, but I can't see anything on the internet that would suggest this.

If it's in neutral and you rev the engine slightly, sometimes you can hear it but the most common time is when pulling out of an intersection or going around a corner slowly - when the car is in first gear. I haven't heard it in any other gears.

My battery did get replaced about a month ago after it died suddenly, but I haven't had any other symptoms. Could you please explain why they think it's an alternator. I'm a bit wary to spend money if it's not likely to fix the problem.

Thanks for your help.

Hi there,
I would trust the mechanic if he has heard the noise, and is sure that the alternator is the cause. Ask him why he thinks it is the alternator.
If in doubt go and seek a second opinion to verify the noise heard, maybe demostrate the sound and confirm you are both hearing the same sound.
